Bald Eagles Soar In Palisades

My last two Sunday morning rows with the Piermont Rowing Club have turned into bird watching expeditions.  When the wind blows from the north, the calmest water is to the south of the Piermont pier, and recently we have been rowing the long eight person shell around the pier and heading south towards Sneden's Landing in Palisades.  For the past two years, a nesting pair of bald eagles have made their home in really prime real estate- in a tall pine tree right on the edge of the palisades.  Their nest is a huge conglomeration of twigs, probably four feet in diameter, and at least fifty feet off the ground.  They have a pair of fledglings up there with them, and are constantly fishing for their young.  We stopped for a breather this morning underneath the cliffs, and were rewarded with the sight of one of the parents leaving the nest, and majestically flapping his way northward.  As a bonus, on the way back last week, there was a group of deer wading in the river in front of the salt water marsh next to Tallman State Park.  We caught a glimpse of the deer today standing in the tall grass, and were also treated to the sight of large striped bass jumping out of of the water.  All in all, it was a wonderful way to start the day.
